Let’s take care of each other

Lessons in
Empathy came often at home.
Ten fingers to count each affront my
Sister committed.
Then, when crying lead nowhere we hugged,
And said sorry, and played ello, and snuggled the dog.
Kisses to make up,
Eyeing apologies we think we are owed. Understanding might be enough.
Caring is punk…
And listening is revolutionary;
Read often, absorb stories often trodden upon.
Every voice a song, a manifesto, a joy.
Our paths might cross, and we will be lucky and
Find commonground.
Eat at each other’s tables.
Ask why, ask often.
Caring is punk!
Hear the quiet of an understatement.
Offer trinkets, offer jokes, offer comfort, offer help.
Take less, take less.
Hearts too worn need rest, need a calm hand to still a frightened chest.
Err on the side of Love; I need you.
Really, I need you.
